Microchips are a powerful tool in protecting your pet and ensuring they return home safely if they ever get lost. But did you know that a microchip is only as effective as the information linked to it? Keeping your contact details up to date with both the microchip registry and Washoe County Regional Animal Services (WCRAS) is essential. Here’s how you can ensure your pet’s microchip is working to its full potential.

How to Update Your Pet’s Microchip Information

Find Your Pet’s Microchip Number

If your pet is already microchipped, you can find their microchip number on their adoption paperwork or microchip certificate. Don’t have it handy? No problem! Here’s how to find it:

  1. Visit a Public Microchip Scanning Station: WCRAS, in partnership with local organizations, has placed public, self-service microchip scanning stations across Washoe County. Visit HelpingPetsHome.com to find a scanning station near you.
  2. Stop by WCRAS: We’re happy to scan your pet for a microchip during our business hours.
  3. Ask Your Vet: Most veterinary clinics have microchip scanners and can help you locate your pet’s microchip number.

Update Your Contact Information

  1. Update your contact information with WCRAS in person or use our convenient online form: Update Microchip Information.
  2. Login or contact the microchip registry associated with your pet’s microchip. Not sure which registry to contact? Use the AAHA Microchip Lookup Tool to find out.

Why Microchips Matter

  • Permanent Identification: Unlike collars and tags that can fall off or get lost, a microchip provides a permanent form of identification that stays with your pet for life.
  • Improved Chance of Reunification: In Washoe County, microchipped pets are five times more likely to be reunited with their families! Don’t miss out on this lifesaving advantage.
